Contemporary vs Modern Furniture Style

The Differences Between Modern and Contemporary Styles

The phrases “modern” and “contemporary” sometimes confuse the field of interior design, primarily because they are mistakenly used interchangeably. In reality, the two names are entirely dissimilar, and each style has distinct components.

Modern and contemporary styles’ Periods

Although you would think of modern style as being current, modern refers to a specific historical period from the 1920s to the 1950s in terms of design. The time “mid-century modern” might also be used to describe this look, but it’s usually abbreviated.

Contemporary does not only apply to one era. Instead, it incorporates the most recent design fads, which means it’s constantly changing. Contrary to other design trends, contemporary style lacks fixed traits. With trends and demand, its qualities alter.

Design Features of Modern Architecture

Modern interior design features several distinctive components. It is renowned for being spotless and having lots of space. Generally speaking, there aren’t many pointless details. Most of the time, floors are left bare, though you can occasionally use a wool rug.

The majority of contemporary furniture is constructed of natural materials. These include leather, linen, and wood. Polished metal and plastic are also used in other items, such as seats. With the furniture often raised, the trend toward open space is maintained.

Current Contemporary Style Characteristics

Modern fashion frequently takes cues from the past and gives vintage styles a fresh spin. At the moment, the contemporary style tends to favour comfortable design.

The modern contemporary style uses open space in its floor plans, just like the modern style. Contemporary furniture in furniture stores frequently has crisp, clean lines, but it can also have strange shapes to give rooms a more daring appearance.

Why the Two Are Perplexed

There are more factors involved in the confusion between the two styles than only the similarity in the definitions of “modern” and “contemporary.”

Many contemporary designs revive the modern look, including elements from that period. These two have been muddled as a result.

The distinction between modern and contemporary interior design may be the most misunderstood, but you now understand what makes each style special. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, visit Fairfield Galleries to find the furniture that suits your lifestyle.

Wood furniture cleaning

Wooden tables, chairs, and shelves will develop a dark coating from the polishes and dust you use to clean them. Periodic deep cleaning is necessary to keep your furniture looking its best.

How to clean wood furniture without ruining the finish is explained here:

  • To remove any visible dust, give the furniture a light dusting with a soft cloth. Light soiling can now be scrubbed away with a damp cloth.
  • Start with the mildest cleaning and work your way up to the stronger ones as necessary. Make a dilute solution of dishwashing soap and water and see if it helps.
  • Wipe the entire piece with a delicate cloth dipped in the solution and wrung out. A damp cloth, not a wet one, is what you need.
  • Rinse your cloth frequently and avoid saturating the wood.
  • Dry the artwork completely with a second clean cloth.

How do you remove old polish?

  • You can revive an old piece of furniture if you know how to remove decades-old polish from old wood.
  • Boil two tea bags for two minutes, then strain.
  • Afterward, brew a cup of tea and enjoy!
  • To clean the wood, use a soft towel and wring it out until it is damp.
  • Tea’s tannic acid is excellent for preserving wood. The wood will take on a new luster that you won’t expect.
  • Remove Wood Stains Due to Water Damage

Here’s how to remove water stains from wood if a hot or cold beverage has been placed straight on the table’s surface.

  • Rinse the stained area with water and apply a small amount of non-gel toothpaste.
  • Baking soda and toothpaste are effective at removing tough stains.
  • Using a wet cloth, remove the toothpaste from the teeth and allow them to dry properly.
  • Remove Difficult Wood Marks

Removing an ink scribble:

  • To make a thin paste, combine one tablespoon of baking soda with one teaspoon of water.
  • Use a soft, absorbent cloth to massage the stain away gently.
  • To remove the toothpaste, use a moist towel to wipe it away.

After cleaning your furniture, apply a coat of wood polish to protect the finish and bring out the natural radiance of the wood grain.

Furniture Polish Made at Home

Lemon oil can be purchased in a bottle from a supermarket—Mix 1 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup white vinegar to make an easy polish. Use a soft cloth to apply it to the wood and wipe it toward the grain. It’s time to shine.

How to Pick the Best Wood for Your Furniture: Different Types of Wood

The market offers a variety of woods for furniture (hardwood and softwood). Each variety’s color, density, grain, and finishing vary, and each type is unique in these respects. Your unit’s cost can be accurately calculated by choosing a quality piece of wood. Whether or not you decide to restore, resell, or toss a piece of furniture depends on its condition.

Though it is possible to utilize any wood to build furniture, not all woods are the same. That’s why it’s so important to pick wisely.

Understanding the qualities of the wood, you plan to use for your furniture is essential.

Detailed information on wood varieties, hardwood and softwood comparisons, wood attributes, a wood hardness chart, wood processing, the best furniture woods, a list of furniture’s best woods, how to pick the best wood for your furniture, and woodworking tools are all included in this guide.

Wood Types

The wood used for furniture can be easily identified by its hardness. The prevalent idea that hardwood is stronger and denser than softwood is incorrect. Hardwood comes from blooming trees, while softwood comes from conifers, according to botanical definitions. Hardwood and softwood are employed for a wide range of projects, from construction to interior design.

Hardwood

Maple, oak, and walnut are examples of hardwood derived from Angiosperms. Annual leaf drop occurs on these trees (deciduous or broad-leafed trees). Hardwood fibers are denser because of their slower growth rate (fiber tracheids and libriform fibers).

Hardwoods have an odd fact: some of them sink to the bottom of a pool of water. When it comes to wood sinks in water, Black ironwood is possibly the toughest and heaviest of the bunch.

Hardwood’s physical characteristics

  • It takes longer to mature than other types of wood. As a result, hardwood is a pricey option, and a few exceptions exist. For example, the gum is a hardwood comparable in price to most softwoods, such as pine.
  • Hardwood is long-lasting (less prone to decay and rot), beautiful, and low-maintenance.
  • Hardwood is widely used for wooden floors due to its high fire resistance and low sap content. In addition to its wide range of natural hues, designs, and perforated plate patterns, hardwood flooring is highly regarded.
  • Furniture can also be made out of it. Several varieties of hardwood can be used to make furniture, but not all of them are ideal.

Softwood

Gymnosperms, such as pine, spruce, fir, cedar, juniper, redwood, and yew, are seed-bearing evergreen trees that produce softwood. Taking down evergreen trees is a lot easier than deciduous ones because they’re less dense in the first place. It is also easier to cut long straight planks of wood since they are tall and straight.

Hard and Softwood Properties

  • Tracheids and wood rays are found in softwood, but vessels are absent. Softwood is also known as non-porous wood since no vessels exist.
  • As a result of their lack of vessels, softwoods are better at absorbing adhesives.
  • Various building materials, including structural frames, exterior and interior wall cladding, fixtures, floor coverings (including carpet), formwork, and scaffolding, are made from softwood. Another industry in which it is employed is the paper and cardboard manufacturing industry.
  • The grain is looser, the sap content is higher, and the color is lighter. Despite this, it is prone to burn due to its lack of fire resistance.
  • It is the greatest wood for furniture because of its fine and light structure.

Wood’s Qualities

It’s a sort of wood that’s most commonly utilized in constructing structures like beams and pillars. Typically, mature trees are chopped into beams and boards after the logs have been peeled. However, for it to serve its purpose, wood must have specific characteristics.

Elasticity:

Timber’s elasticity is also a key quality in a product, allowing the wood to return to its original shape with the utmost precision. Sports and construction equipment manufacturing relies heavily on this feature. The wood’s elastic strength is determined by its Young’s Modulus of Elasticity (EL) along the longitudinal axis.

Wood’s flexibility and load-carrying ability are far greater when cut perpendicular to the grain than when cut parallel. As a result, the long axis of structural (building) timber boards is oriented parallel to the grain when they are cut into boards. It is more resistant to distortion and has superior dimensional stability.

Fibers:

Wood’s elasticity, for example, is affected by its fiber arrangement and microfibril orientation. For the most part, the diameter and thickness of hardwood cell walls are much smaller and denser than those in softwoods. The fibers must be straight, compact, and hard when used as lumber compared to wood with straight strands, and twisted yarns have less strength.

Resistant to Fire:

A fire-resistant wood is needed. Thermal breakdown occurs when wood or lumber is subjected to fire, and a layer of charcoal forms on the burning surface. The inner core of the wood is protected by the layer’s role as an insulator. Because of the wood’s inherent ability to defend itself, it has a high level of fire resistance. As a result, wood with a higher density has a greater ability to resist fire.

Hardness:

A person’s hardness is innate, and the type of wood you use has a significant impact on the final product. Construction, flooring, and sports equipment all call for timber that can tolerate physical abrasion and mechanical wear and tear.

Shopping for Solid Wood Furniture at the Best Stores

“They don’t make them like that anymore” is a common adage. Try to picture the person who has taught you so much, whether it’s a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or an older family member who has served as a mentor or a close family friend. Imagine what it’s like to be a guest in their home. Inviting vintage solid wood armoires and smooth wooden side tables with rich natural wood grain have been passed down through families for generations. Pieces like this communicate a family history, serve as focal points for memories, and help a house seem like a home. You might assume it’s difficult to reproduce them since “they don’t manufacture them like that anymore,” but is that the case.

Let us tell you a little secret, “they” genuinely do “create them like that.” It is unnecessary to scour antique shops or your great-attic aunts for all high-quality pieces of furniture. There are many locations where you can buy quality, solid wood furniture that won’t break the bank but will deliver a lifetime of satisfaction and the same nostalgic sensation as your grandma’s china cabinet. I’m curious to know what “that” means. Solid wood is a magical combination of two words.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE MADE OF “SOLID WOOD?”

Using the word “solid wood,” one can tell the difference between natural wood and other types of wood, including engineered and composite. Solid wood, as opposed to veneers or strands of wood linked together with adhesives, is constructed from solid pieces of lumber.

Solid wood furniture may have some texture if you feel it. Compared to furniture manufactured of cheaper materials like particleboard, it is far heavier and more robust. Solid wood furniture can survive for decades, while inexpensive furniture may only last a few years.

Is there any reason to choose solid wood furniture above anything else?

Over other wood products, solid wood furniture offers numerous benefits. Engineering woods don’t necessitate any chemical or gluing agents, unlike their counterparts.

Because the panels are constructed entirely from hardwood, they are easy to repair and refinish. Assembling and disassembling solid wood pieces is frequently possible because the wood is more resistant to damage when attached parts are unscrewed. A selection of solid wood furniture looks like real wood because it’s crafted from real wood, not synthetic wood veneers.

Furniture made of solid wood is stronger, more resistant to dampness, and lasts longer, but it costs more due to the higher quality of the wood used. On the other hand, solid wood furniture doesn’t have to cost a fortune. New furniture retailers are making solid wood furniture more accessible to consumers.

Solid wood furniture’s endurance also serves counter to the disposable consumerist culture. In addition to the packaging and trash that comes with purchasing new furniture every few years, low-quality manufactured wood products have shorter lifespans. They are more likely to end up in landfills sooner. “Budget is everything,” says the adage, and this couldn’t be more true. Buying on a tight budget is a sure way to rack up debt. Buying cheap furniture made of engineered wood will only last a few years before you have to buy it again. It is predicted that solid wood furniture will last for many years to come. Investing in a single piece of high-quality furniture will likely save money in the long run.

Keep your living room warm and cozy this winter with these five tips.

You don’t have to allow the cold weather and gloomy clouds to get the better of you. Cozy up in style this winter with these modest additions to your living area.

COLOR PALETTE

Consider your color scheme first and foremost. As a rule, it’s best to go with bright, colorful hues in the spring/summer and switch to muted or richer shades for the winter. Fall is my favorite season because of the rich, warm colors, and winter is my favorite season because of the soft, muted tones. To celebrate Christmas, I used blush pink and grey to decorate my home, but I’ve kept the color scheme going as I transition into the new year.

USE TEXTURE TO ADD WARMTH AND COZINESS.

Throw cushions and blankets are a must-have right now! Faux fur, velvet, chenille, and other textures you might not normally choose aren’t as scary as they seem.

Use CANDLES AND FAIRY LIGHTS TO ENHANCE THE TEMPERATURE

If you’re a candle lover, now is the time to get into the spirit of things truly. You’ll also awaken your senses if you choose your perfume carefully! Using fairy lights is another fantastic method to achieve this soft lighting effect, and it’s the perfect way to light up a room with these beautiful flowers.

INSERT YOURSELF INTO THE NATURE YOU LOVE

Bring some greenery into your living room this winter, whether in the form of flowers, plants, or tree cuttings. In addition to grounding your area, the addition of greenery creates a pleasing visual contrast.

REDUCE THE EXPECTATIONS AND KEEP IT SIMPLE

Most of us feel a strong impulse to declutter, organize, and clean our homes at the beginning of a new year. So why not similarly decorate your home? Stick to a few key pieces to create beautiful vignettes with an uncluttered appearance. This appearance can also be achieved by using a simple color palette.

OUTSTANDING DESIGN IDEAS FOR INSIDE A FIREPLACE

Do you want to give your fireplace some personality? A unique, built-in effect can be achieved by installing shelf units around an existing fireplace mantel.

You can use built-ins as a decorative element and a space for additional storage when installing them on either side of your fireplace.

The wall surrounding the fireplace is often the room’s primary design feature. With this in mind, we offer a few interesting and unique ideas for built-ins around a fireplace if you want to improve the aesthetics of your home.

COLOR BANGS

This gorgeous blue-gray hue was one of the first things I did when we moved into our home six years ago, and it has since become one of our most popular choices for living room built-ins.

SW Serious Gray stands out in a sea of white and ties our living room and the rest of our house with its soothing shade of blue.

Even though our built-ins are on the small side, there is still enough room for a few artistic touches.

In the case of built-ins, it is important to decide whether or not you want the fireplace surround to be in line with the built-ins or recessed into the wall, as in this example.

This old brick fireplace was given a DIY makeover with some MDF, wood and crown molding, but the built-ins were custom created when the house was built.

The white birch

These built-ins made of white birch are gorgeous. Everything is in place, from the brass library lamps to the quartz fireplace. A warm living area is created when function and design come together.

The lower cabinets are great storage, and the shelving is a great spot to decorate.

When the library lights are turned on, they give a warm mood to the space and add character to the built-ins.

Let’s talk about the fireplace for a moment. Our favorite part of the mantel is how the builder used a variety of moldings and trimmings to make it stand out.

The builder sought to add depth and architectural aspects to this mantel while keeping the backdrop basic for this project.

The grey quartz inlay, which is medium-toned, adds a lot of contrast.

The bleached white oak built-ins in this room truly bring out the beauty of the hardwood flooring.

Antiques, books, and brass cabinet knobs were included in the design to bring the room together flawlessly.

BUILT-INS IN BLANK SLATE/WHITE

The builder thoughtfully designed everything about this home, from the high ceilings and huge windows to the stunning fireplace.

Framed televisions have gained popularity over the past few years, and we’re big fans. When not in use, they’re designed to look like a work of art.

The white shiplap backdrop perfectly exemplifies the builder’s desire for a clean yet homey look. When the boards are installed vertically, the area appears even taller due to the increased emphasis on the ceiling.

From the textured baskets to the exquisite diverse styled vases, the earthy tones are well displayed on the shelves.

PURE AND SIMPLE ACCENTS

The combination of a built-in cabinet and a fireplace is bound to catch our eye. It’s a time-honored addition that works well with the larger bottom cabinets for added storage.

You can hide clutter like a cable box and other technological devices by using closed storage like these cabinets. This allows the design features and ornamental items on the open shelf to shine truly.

If you’re making simple built-ins like this, paying attention to the trim and crown molding is critical. Recessed lighting placed immediately over the fireplace also makes a difference.

This builder’s interior design features a soothing color scheme of earthy tones and seashore blues.

HOW TO PAINT FURNITURE AS A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

The following instructions will show you how to paint real-wood furniture on a budget, breathe new life into an old piece, or enjoy the beauty of painted furniture. Everything you need to know about painting furniture is included in this comprehensive tutorial.

PAINT READY FURNITURE.

Preparation for painting furniture is the most tedious element of the process. It’s not much fun, but it’s necessary if you want a decent outcome. You may need to perform more or less prep depending on the piece you’re painting and the type of paint you’re using. That piece of furniture, on the other hand, should not be painted at this point!

Please get rid of the hardware and get it cleaned and repaired.

Any paint you choose will require a thorough cleaning of your furniture before it can be properly applied. This includes removing any traces of dirt and dust as well as any traces of oil. It is necessary to remove hardware such as knobs and pulls and a patch in any holes, dents and scratches with wood putty before lightly sanding.

FURNITURE PAINT IN CHALK OR SIMILAR MATTE FINISH

Preparation for chalk paint is undoubtedly the simplest. Mostly, any surface may be painted over with chalk paint. I always recommend scrubbing your furniture thoroughly with a teaspoon or a teaspoon replacement, then wiping with a liquid deglosser. Using a deglosser is one of my favorite tips for getting paint to adhere. When the surface is sanded down, it helps the paint adhere much better than if it were left shiny and bright.

Fusion Mineral Paint is my favorite because it doesn’t require a wax top coat like Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint.

The Latex Paint

Using latex paint, I’ve painted a slew of pieces of furniture with great success. Compared to other strategies, this one necessitates much more planning. First, use medium-grit sandpaper to sand down the gloss on any table treated with polyacrylic or polyurethane (is there a shiny hard coat?). The surface has been softened, but not totally. After that, a thorough cleaning with the teaspoon cleaner is required, and it’s best if you let it air dry.

Before painting with latex, prime the furniture with a shellac-based primer (such as this), the paint will stick better, and the furniture’s surface will be protected from stains and tannins.

It is possible to apply latex paint using a paintbrush or a roller. Always use light coatings. Three thin layers rather than two thick applications will produce a better finish. If you’re concerned about brushstrokes, a solution like Floetrol can help keep the paint from drying too quickly and thus reduce brushstrokes. If you’re painting over oil-based paint, you might also choose Hard Coat (which dries to a rock-hard finish) or Oil Bond. Always sand between coats of color with fine-grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections (220 grit). Use the tack cloth to remove any remaining dust.
